Vertical Compost Toilet

MattonOffice/Ernest Israels with Atelier Van Lieshout for Rotterdam Cultural Capital 2001

The compost toilet fits perfectly in the filosophy of autonomy. No pipes or cables are needed to make this toilet function and therefor you can place it whereever you want.

The concept of this vertically organised toilet is made by MattonOffice with Ernest Israels, and produced by Joep van Lieshouts‘ AVL. The toilet is based on the first floor, in the vertical cylinder a contruction of ventilation pipes provides the oxigene needed for the proces of composting. After toilet use, put in a hand of straw for ,flushing‘. Through the window you can follow the process of composting from downstairs in the living.

After some years you can harvest your compost and use it to grow vegetables.
